We are often asked why the medical screening questions we use during a Lighthouse quote are so different from other medical providers. The simple answer is we use an in-house medical screening programme called Protectif.

What is Protectif?

Protectif Medical Risk Rating is used both in our Customer Service centre and also in our online quote service. Protectif is a bespoke medical screening system that asks you relevant questions about your medical condition to let us assess your health status effectively (from a travel insurance perspective). We believe it offers one of the most thorough approaches in in the industry. Instead of erring on the side of caution and categorising all of our customers with the same condition as having the same amount of risk (and charging an excessive premium), Protectif helps us understand your unique situation — offering a more personalised assessment and, where possible, a fairer premium.

Accurate Health Evaluation: The question sets we ask to allow us to understand your individual medical circumstances, including your overall stability and wellbeing, and provide a refreshing, common-sense approach to the impact your medical condition may have on travel.

Medication First: Protectif works differently to other medical screening systems by asking for your medications first. This helps us consider all conditions, provides the Insurer’s appointed Emergency Assistance team with crucial information to help if you have an emergency during your trip and also ensures nothing is forgotten. We aim to offer you a premium that reflects your individual circumstances and the cover you choose.

Simple Process: In order to complete your medical screening, just enter your medications and then your conditions when prompted during your quote journey. The system will guide you through each step, and if needed, help is available via Live Chat or by contacting us.

After you’ve completed your quote, we’ll send you a summary of the questions and your answers. If anything changes medically before you travel, or you notice an error, please contact us to update your details. Please be aware that if your medical information changes, it may affect your policy which could mean:

  • an additional premium,
  • new exclusions, or,
  • in some cases, a change to your cover.

We will always explain any changes clearly so you can understand your options and make an informed decision.
