Finding travel insurance after a cancer diagnosis can sometimes feel complicated. At Lighthouse Travel Insurance, we aim to make the process as straightforward as possible with Protectif, our in-house medical screening system.
Protectif is designed to help us understand your individual medical circumstances by asking relevant questions about your health. This allows us to assess your travel insurance application based on your own situation, rather than making assumptions based on a medical condition alone.
What is Protectif?
Protectif is a medical screening system used throughout the Lighthouse Travel Insurance quote journey, both online and by our customer service team.
Rather than asking the same set of questions for everyone, Protectif asks questions that are tailored to the medical conditions you declare. This helps us build a clearer picture of your health and allows us to assess your application in line with our underwriting criteria.
With information on more than 11,000 medical conditions, including over 200 cancers, Protectif is continually reviewed to reflect developments in medical knowledge and clinical practice. Our team works with medical specialists and charities to help ensure the questions remain relevant and appropriate.
How Protectif Works
Medication-led screening
Unlike many medical screening systems, Protectif begins by asking about the medication you currently take.
This helps identify all of the medical conditions that may need to be considered during your assessment and reduces the chance of something important being missed. The information you provide may also assist the insurer’s appointed Emergency Assistance team if you require medical help during your trip.
Questions tailored to you
Once your medications and medical conditions have been entered, Protectif will ask follow-up questions based on your individual circumstances.
The questions are designed to help us understand factors such as:
- Your diagnosis
- Current treatment
- Recent symptoms
- Overall stability of your condition
This information helps us assess you application according to our underwriting criteria and the cover you have selected.
Simple online process
Completing your medical screening is straightforward.
Simply:
- Enter your medication (where applicable).
- Declare your medical conditions.
- Answer the follow-up questions presented by Protectif.
The system will guide you through each stage, and if you need assistance, our customer service team is available to help.
After You Receive Your Quote
Once your quote has been completed, you’ll receive documentation showing the medical information you’ve provided during the screening process.
We recommend checking these details carefully.
If you notice anything that needs correcting, or if your health changes before you travel, please let us know as soon as possible.
Depending on the change in your circumstances, this may result in:
- an additional premium;
- revised policy terms or exclusions; or
- in some cases, changes to the cover available.
Any changes will be explained clearly so you can decide how you would like to proceed.
Keeping Your Medical Information Up to Date
Your health can change between purchasing your policy and travelling.
If you:
- receive a new diagnosis;
- begin new investigations or treatment;
- are prescribed new medication; or
- experience a change in an existing medical condition,
please contact us before you travel so we can review your policy.
Changes to your medical information may affect your policy and should always be reported.
We’re Always Improving
At Lighthouse Travel Insurance, we regularly review customer feedback to improve our quote journey and online experience.
Recent updates to Protectif include the ability to edit your medical screening answers during your quote if you’ve made a mistake, making it easier to review your information before you continue.
We’ll continue listening to customer feedback and making improvements wherever possible to help make arranging travel insurance simpler.
