Travel Insurance for Prostate Cancer: Common Questions Answered
August 25, 2026
A prostate cancer diagnosis can bring new questions when you start thinking about a holiday. Can you still get travel insurance? What do you need to declare? What if you are having treatment or your cancer is being monitored?
If those questions are going through your mind, you are far from alone. Around 57,900 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK each year, according to Cancer Research UK.
Having prostate cancer does not automatically mean that travel is off the table. Whether you are looking forward to a holiday during treatment, after treatment or while your cancer is being monitored, the important thing is finding out what is right for you.
Here are some of the questions you might have when planning your trip.
Can you get travel insurance with prostate cancer?
In many cases, travel insurance with prostate cancer may still be available.
This could include if you are:
- Receiving prostate cancer treatment.
- Recovering after treatment or surgery.
- Taking ongoing medication.
- Having your cancer monitored, including through active surveillance.
- In remission.
When you get a quote, travel insurance medical screening helps build a picture of your individual health and circumstances rather than looking at your diagnosis alone.
You may be asked about your prostate cancer, treatment, medication, hospital appointments and how you are now. Answering these questions accurately helps us assess the cover that may be available to you.
Do you need to declare prostate cancer to your travel insurer?
You will need to tell your travel insurer about your prostate cancer, even if you feel well, your treatment has finished or your cancer is currently being monitored.
What you need to declare will depend on the questions you are asked during medical screening.
You may be asked about:
- Your prostate cancer diagnosis.
- Treatment you have received or are currently having.
- Any surgery you have had.
- Medication you take.
- Hospital appointments, follow-up care or monitoring.
- Your current health.
- Any other medical conditions you have.
You do not need to decide for yourself which parts of your medical history are relevant. Simply answer the questions you are asked as accurately as you can.
Can you travel during prostate cancer treatment?
For some people, travelling during prostate cancer treatment is still possible. What is right for you will depend on the treatment you are having, how it is affecting you and the trip you are planning.
Before booking, it is worth talking your plans through with your healthcare team. You could ask about:
- Your treatment dates.
- Any side effects that could affect your trip.
- Medication you will need while you are away.
- Whether there are any concerns about flying.
- Follow-up appointments you need to plan around.
Prostate cancer treatment can affect everyone differently, so your healthcare team can give you advice based on your own circumstances rather than somebody else’s experience.
Sometimes changing the timing of a trip, choosing a shorter journey or simply leaving a little more space in your plans can make travelling feel more manageable.
How soon can you travel after prostate cancer surgery?
There is no single waiting period for travelling after prostate cancer surgery that will be right for everyone.
When you are ready to travel will depend on the operation you have had, how your recovery is progressing and whether you have experienced any complications.
If you are thinking about a trip, particularly one involving a flight, speak to your healthcare team about when travelling may be suitable for you.
If urinary symptoms are still part of your recovery, a little extra preparation can make the journey easier. You might want to think about toilet access, choosing an aisle seat or keeping anything, you may need during the journey somewhere easy to reach.
Everyone recovers differently, so give yourself permission to plan a trip that works for how you feel now.

Travelling with a catheter after prostate cancer treatment
If you are travelling with a catheter, it can help to plan ahead so you have everything you need while you are away.
Consider taking:
- A spare catheter where appropriate.
- Extra drainage bags or catheter valves.
- Any cleaning or care supplies you normally use.
- Supplies in your hand luggage as well as your main baggage.
Speak to your nurse before travelling if you have any questions about looking after your catheter while you are away.
It is also worth checking with your airline about travelling with catheter equipment or other medical supplies. You may be asked for a letter from your doctor or nurse explaining why you need the equipment.
Taking prostate cancer medication abroad
Medication does not have to stand between you and your holiday, but it is worth getting organised before you leave.
Remember to:
- Take enough medication for your whole trip, plus some extra where appropriate in case of delays.
- Keep essential medication in your hand luggage so it stays with you during your journey.
- Check how your medication needs to be stored.
- Check the rules for taking your medication into your destination.
- Carry supporting medical information if your healthcare team recommends it.
If you are crossing several time zones and are unsure when to take your medication, ask your healthcare team or pharmacist before travelling.
Does prostate cancer affect the cost of travel insurance?
Having prostate cancer can affect the price of travel insurance, but your diagnosis is only one part of the picture.
The cost of your policy can depend on a number of things, including:
- Your individual medical circumstances.
- Treatment you are having or have previously received.
- Your age.
- Your destination.
- The length of your trip.
- The type and level of cover you choose.
This is why somebody else’s experience or quote will not necessarily tell you what your own prostate cancer travel insurance will cost.
Medical screening allows your individual circumstances to be considered so you can see the cover and price available for your trip.
What if your health changes after buying travel insurance?
Your health or treatment can sometimes change between buying a policy and going on holiday.
You might start a new treatment, change medication, receive new test results or be given different medical advice.
If something changes, check your policy terms and contact your travel insurance provider where required before travelling. They can explain whether the change needs to be reassessed and whether it affects your cover.
Checking before you go means you can understand where you stand and get back to concentrating on your trip.
Travelling with prostate cancer: looking ahead
A prostate cancer diagnosis can add a few extra considerations to planning a holiday, but those preparations do not have to become the focus of your trip.
Maybe you are travelling while your cancer is being monitored. Perhaps treatment has recently finished. Or maybe you are planning your first proper holiday after a difficult few months.
Whatever stage you are at, travel can still be something to look forward to.
Speak to the healthcare team who knows your circumstances, give yourself time to make any arrangements you need and make sure your travel insurance reflects your health as it is now.
At Lighthouse, we want to be there through diagnosis, treatment, recovery and the travels that come afterwards – helping make travel insurance feel clearer and more understanding of your individual circumstances.
Then you can spend a little less time thinking about prostate cancer and a little more time deciding where you would like to travel to next.
